Our Community - Cultural Centre
Nhulunbuy Primary School established a Cultural Centre in 2011 as a way of acknowledging the traditional owners as an integral part of this school. The Cultural Centre is staffed by a full time AIEW (Aboriginal and Islander Education Worker)
Indigenous students, parents, friends and community members have an easily accessible centre at the front of the school which allows for ease of communication, nutritional programs, improved attendance and homework centre. Indigenous community members access the Centre with its relaxed and informal atmosphere, caring and understanding AIEW, proximity to the EAL/D classroom and possibilities for sharing knowledge and stories.
ANNUAL YOUTH FORUM

In 2012, NPS planned and delivered a Youth Forum focusing on ‘Leading by Example’. The Forum was co-ordinated by Mr Matt Watson, Principal of NPS and Naomi Barba, AIEW, NPS. The Forum was an opportunity for students, community groups, teachers and families to get together and focus on opportunities for leadership either as individuals or as part of a team in the Eastern Arnhem Region. Key speakers and leaders spoke and recounted aspects of leadership and students had the opportunity to share, role play, interact and demonstrate aspects of leadership that have positive influences on their lives. Over 60 students participated and had the opportunity to reflect on their learning experiences and team building exercises throughout the day. |
